Creating Zones in Open Plan Spaces

Open plan designs came into popularity decades ago, and are still a practical design for busy families and entertaining. But there are some creative and beautiful design elements that can transform your open plan home from feeling cavernous and hollow into comfy zones that facilitate conversation and intimacy.

One of the best features of open plan homes is the flow of the light throughout the space. But lighting can also help define areas within the space. For example, recessed and task lighting in the kitchen layered with pendants over the dining area of an island can transition the functional area of the kitchen into the dining area. Hanging a large or interesting chandelier over the formal dining area then creates a focal point within the open space to provide definition for that area.

Layered lighting, pendulum and chandelier help define the zones of the kitchen and dining area.

Another fantstic way to help define spaces within an open floor plan is to use half walls, open shelving, or interior windows to help create a feeling of intimate “nooks” while maintaining the visual sightlines throughout the spaces. Half walls allow for furniture to be placed in the middle of a space, but still seem anchored within that zone. Open shelving or interior windows provide a break in the sightline but still allow light to flow through. Additionally, they can help create additional storage or display areas for mementos and heirloom pieces.
