Winter Energy Saving Tips

Winter is coming, whether we’re ready for it or not! Tis’ the season for going to work in the dark and getting home in the dark. The temperatures are dropping and it won’t be long before there will be snow here in Central Oregon. Following some of these energy saving tips will help you to have extra cash for more enjoyable things, a bonus with Christmas just around the corner!

Take Advantage of natural heat from the sun

By opening your curtains during the day you will allow sunlight to heat your home naturally. On the flip side, ensure you close the blinds at night to keep the chill and draft out of your home.

Adjust your Thermostat

In the morning before leaving the house, adjust the thermostat. Leaving the heat turned up to 70 degrees while everyone is away from the house is like watching money be flushed down the drain.

In the evenings, when heading to bed, try lowering the thermostat by 5, 10 or 15 degrees. You will probably find that it will still be comfortable while you sleep.

Maintain and Service Your Heating System

For furnaces, make sure to change your furnace filter as needed. This could be as little as once a year, or as much as once a month depending on how often it is ran.

For wood or pellet burning stoves, make sure to clean the flue vent regularly! Also, if needed, clean the inside of the appliance with a wire brush to scrape off debris and build up. This will ensure that your home is heated efficiently.

Reduce Heat Loss from the Fireplace

Ensure that the fireplace damper is closed (unless burning a fire). When the damper is left open it allows warm air from the house to escape through the chimney.

Make sure to seal/plug the chimney flue if you never use the fireplace.

Install tempered glass doors, and a heat-air exchange system allowing you to blow the warm air throughout the entire house.

Lower Your Holiday Lighting Costs

Make sure to use LED (light-emitting diode) holiday lights. These lights help reduce the cost of decorating because they use less energy than traditional holiday lights.

Other Tips to Help Save on Energy

Air dry dishes, thus reducing your dishwasher use.

Turn lights off when you leave the room.

Turn off TV’s and DVD players along with computer/monitors when not using them.

Check your thermostat on your water heater and lower to 120 degrees.

Reduce your laundry by wearing clothes multiple times and by washing only full loads.

Close the door behind you when stepping outside.
